It is thaaaat time of year!!! The start of September often feels like a fresh chapter (to me at least). The Ber months -September, October, November, and December- bring a shift in energy: school routines are in full swing, the air begins to cool, and the holidays loom on the horizon. This transition can be exciting, but it can also stir up anxiety, burnout, or emotional exhaustion.

That’s why September is an ideal month to pause and notice what allows you to feel good or what helps you stay curious about yourself and your needs. In this article, we’ll explore why the change of season impacts mental health, how to understand your patterns, and practical ways to reset before the busy months ahead.

Understanding Seasonal Shifts and Stress

Many people notice that their stress or anxiety increases as fall begins. The added structure of school schedules, upcoming holidays, or shorter days can bring pressure and fatigue. For nurses, first responders, and healthcare professionals, these months often mean heavier workloads and less time for rest.

Clients often say things like:

  • “I always feel drained by October.”

  • “I want to enjoy the holidays, but I usually end up overwhelmed.”

  • “I can’t seem to find my balance once fall starts.”

  • "It's like I cannot get ahead of anything!"

Have you found yourself saying similar things?

Why This Happens

Transitions often stir up old stress responses. From a psychological perspective, shifts in the seasons and schedule changes can activate our nervous system, especially if we already live with chronic stress, anxiety, or burnout.

Family systems theory suggests that stress increases (throughout family members) when routines shift and relational pressures rise. I have found this to be common in the Ber months. Routines have changed, everyone has somewhere to be or something to do, and we are preparing for the holiday (Wheeew..I am getting tired just thinking about it).

What You Can Do To Reset Your Mental Health

Here are some gentle strategies to help you reset this September:

  1. Check in daily - Ask yourself, What feels good today? What drains me?

  2. Set seasonal boundaries - Decide now what you will and won’t commit to before holiday stress builds.

  3. Build small rituals - Light a candle, go for an evening walk, or block off a “no screen” hour to help your nervous system reset (try this in the middle or at the end of your day).

  4. Stay curious - Instead of judging your stress (or other emotions), notice it with compassion. Curiosity opens space for change :)

When to Seek Support

If you notice anxiety, burnout, or emotional exhaustion building as fall begins, you don’t have to face it alone. Therapy can help you create boundaries, strengthen resilience, and reconnect with yourself during this busy season.

If you’re ready to feel supported through the Ber months and beyond, I’d love to help.
